Institute of Community Ophthalmology

Established in 1981, ICO grew from informal training started in 1979 to address the shortage of doctors for expanding eye care programmes. Initially an affiliated institution, it eventually became a constituent part of University of Chittagong. A separate Governing Body headed by the Vice Chancellor, University of Chittagong, oversees the institution.

The Institute is headed by a full-time director. Prof F.A Billson, Chairman, Department of Ophthalmology, Sydney University has been closely associated since 1979 and assisted with the creation of ICO. He also created "Penelope Billson Chair of Community Ophthalmology" in memory of his late mother.

The institution runs post-graduate courses leading to Diploma in Community Ophthalmology (DCO). A total of 266 doctors have successfully completed the DCO course. Since 2010, DCO is affiliated by BSMMU, Dhaka. ICO is also a centre for "International Council of Ophthalmology" Examination for the last 15 years.

Diploma in Community Ophthalmology (DCO)

A two-year comprehensive course for medical graduates, conducted by ICO under BSMMU and recognized by Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council. Students are selected through BSMMU admission. The course starts in July every year.
